studio practice

Added on by Taylor Greenfield.

And we're back!  Never mind the rather long hiatus--it's like I never left.

I am grateful for a good semester, I am grateful for this time to make things, but mostly I am grateful for the teeny baby rabbit asleep under my drawing table.

Oh, sweet studio life.

daisy

Added on by Taylor Greenfield.

It's only been 11 days since Daisy had to be put down.  It feels like a million years ago and just yesterday simultaneously.

But there's lots of other things happening--both in the studio and out--so I promise to update more cheerfully soon.  Good news, and I'm keeping my chin up!

wee fort: installed

Added on by Taylor Greenfield.

What a great weekend! In addition to an amazing open studio on Friday night and surviving Michigan Adventure on Saturday (never again, water funnel) , Wee Fort was a big hit.  Thanks to everyone who came out!

Have a great week!

wee fort

Added on by Taylor Greenfield.

Haven't been in the studio much yet this summer--too busy being outside.   There's only so many Michigan summer days, and I intend to use all of them to the fullest.

But!  As soon as I found out about the "Fortified" show part of the upcoming SiTE:LAB at Blandford Nature Center, how could I resist?  I decided to build a fort much like the ones my brother and I built for our stuffed animals when we were little--not big enough for people, but plenty of room for imagination.  My studio time was well spent, and even though I still have a few finishing touches I am really loving how everything came together.

See you next weekend, Saturday July 27th, from noon until 11:00PM.  Can't wait to install this little guy!

burbot!

Burbots are totally weird--a cross between an eel and a catfish.

I love thinking about where they live though, down in the deep.

other work

Added on by Taylor Greenfield.

Although this body of work is slightly different in scale and style than the work I typically post on this site, I thought i'd mention that I have some work in Craft House, a gallery/collaboration space here in downtown Grand Rapids that just opened their small works gallery.

ike I said, not exactly what I've been up to lately with the chalk pastels... but plenty of color (and animals) nonetheless.  I'm particularly fond of the yellow one, since it features a hermit thrush!

Well, back to work!

experiments

Added on by Taylor Greenfield.

I love the ceramics studio at UICA.  It's like a laboratory where i'm less concerned about the results of my experiments than I am in my drawing studio--I feel like I can let go more when I've got clay smooshed between my fingers. I made these little possums a few weeks back, and they just came out of the kiln!

There's also something very different about having something you can hold in your hand versus something you hang on the wall.  hese precious babies will probably need tucking in tonight.

sunny days and lake sturgeons

Added on by Taylor Greenfield.

Yesterday's sunshine found me in my studio, thanking my stars for an already gessoed piece of paper!

I'm starting to plan our first trip up north this spring!  I can't wait to see the water and feel the wind at my back.  This drawing definitely has that up north quality--and lake sturgeons are certainly full of mystery and wildness.

Be well!

Just a little teaser of the work I'm doing in the studio right now.

alewives

Added on by Taylor Greenfield.

Since it's february (not for long though, thank goodness!) I can't help but feel a little gloomy.  Thankfully, the sun graced us with her presence today and made everything feel, even my studio, feel less wintery.

I made a new drawing over the weekend!  Inspired partially by my gloomy mood and the bodies of all the alewives that often litter the beaches of michigan.

eel!

Added on by Taylor Greenfield.

I love eels.  No doubt this fascination was recently brought to the forefront because "river monsters" is on netflix and I can't stop watching it... but I digress. A new drawing, a new body of work.  Not all eels, of course, but plenty of fish.  Representations of our dear ancient lakes--and someday, when it stops being winter (ahem, michigan!), I'll swim in them again.   Can you believe there are actually eels in Michigan?  Mostly in lake erie, but still.  Incredible.

IMG_0040.JPG

Here's my starting point.  my box of chalk pastels may look disorganized, but... yeah ok, it is.  Terribly.  But I tend to work fairly quickly, using a combination of my fingers, palms, and general flailing... so even if I start with everything in order it never stays that way for long.

All in all, a lovely productive day.  Check out the Ancient Lake gallery for more details of the work.  Cheers!
